Kyiv born, Barcelona based, alina sokulska is a choreographer, dance & performance artist, Doctor of Philosophy with a research on contemporary choreography of the African Diaspora.

alina’s long-standing research into social dances, combined with her training in contemporary dance and experience choreographing live with contemporary jazz and improvisational music, has shaped her unique movement language. her engagement with both the theory and practice of social and contemporary dance has led her to develop a personal approach to improvisation and spontaneous composition — an approach that informs both her artistic and her pedagogical methodology, that is actively explored through the Giant Steps Dance Lab in Barcelona. her performances are a deep reflection of her diverse influences and her commitment to experimentation.

alina will bring her unique vision to this edition of Cocoa Blues Exchange, offering creative approaches to reflect on and connect with blues dance and music through contemporary perspectives — grounded in both individual and collective stories.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
focusing on the perspective of African-American music and dance, in particular its cornerstone – blues, this class is designed to give you tools to work on quality of your body movement, musicality and expression.

assimilating experience from various dance styles throughout the years of her professional activity of performing and teaching, alina created a set of practices to better understand our bodies in their movement to blues music, as well as building flow and musicality when improvising.

entering the movement code, listening through the body, learn the vocabulary of blues dance, learn from the wisdom of blues dance, to work with it and through it towards your unique way of moving, – all of this is our concern on this class.
